Here in rural New Hampshire, where I live and work, October is a time of transition. In the span of a week, we’ve gone from 90-degree heat to our first frost…much to the detriment of my vegetable garden and, to my chagrin, waking up in the mornings to a freezing house and having to scurry to relight the woodstove! So, too, with our working lives. We’ve shifted from a summer of recharging, reflecting, and re-strategizing for the new school year to a fall of pushing forward on all those exciting new plans hatched during longer, warmer days.
Our latest issue, OER Ninja: Mastering eResources Curation, is now live and features new contributions on open educational resources by leading school library thinkers, including Brenda Boyer, Marcia Mardis, Sue Ballard, and Paige Jaeger. April Dawkins draws on her original doctoral research to explore the critical subject of librarian self-censorship. Jody Howard, author of the new textbook The School Librarian as Curriculum Leader, offers an introduction to curriculum mapping, while Elissa Malespina profiles educators around the country designing innovative lessons that integrate augmented reality technology. All these resources and more are now available to subscribers under the articles tab.
Also, don’t miss Tom Bober’s live Webinar on October 18th at 4:00 EDT, “Close Reading with Historical Newspapers: Making Meaning from the Past.” Tom is an elementary librarian in Clayton, Missouri, former Teacher in Residence at the Library of Congress, and one of our favorite presenters here at SLC—you won’t want to miss this one. Tom’s presentation will offer teachers and librarians working with children from upper elementary through high school great strategies that get students engaged. This webinar is part of our ongoing “SLC @ the Forefront” series, and as always, it’s 100% free. (If you missed our last Webinar with Diana Rendina, it’s not too late to watch it in the archive here.)
We also look forward to seeing all our Ohio colleagues at the OELMA 2017 conference. Attendees will have the treat of a keynote by our dynamite Technology Connections columnist, Heather Moorefield-Lang, author of the forthcoming School Library Makerspaces in Action. If you’ll be there, don’t forget to stop by and say hello to our colleague Keith Chassé and check out the latest from SLC and Libraries Unlimited.
Happy fall! May it be as fun as it is busy.
